GATORADE Call-Up Candidates

Share This:

Dwayne Jones, Austin - Jones played in only one game last week but scored 27 points with 21 rebounds, extending his streak of games with 20+ boards to three. He is also shooting .638 (67-105) from the field in December. Jones is the best big man in the NBA D-League right now and should be on the short list of any NBA team that needs help in the paint.

Sundiata Gaines, Idaho - Gaines scored 31 points in a game for the fourth time this season on Monday night, and also dished out seven assists in a loss to Utah. His numbers have dropped a bit since moving into the starting lineup, but Gaines is still the most productive guard in the NBA D-League right now. He ranks fourth in scoring with 25.3 points and second with 7.5 assists. He also ranks ninth in the league with 1.9 steals.

Alonzo Gee, Austin - Gee will look to bounce back from his worst shooting game of the season when he went 5-18 from the field against Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. Despite his struggles in that game Gee is still shooting .528 from the field and averaging 21.2 points per game. Most of his points come from getting to the basket or at the free-throw line as Gee has only made one three-pointer this season.

Dontell Jefferson, Utah -  Jefferson has been a very consistent scorer and distributor for the Flash this season, although he is currently in a cold streak from the field. Jefferson is 17-44 over his last three games and will look to bounce back with the Showcase right around the corner.

Morris Almond, Springfield - Everyone who has paid attention to the NBA D-League in the past two years knows that Almond can score, and he is back to his old tricks after joing the Armor. The former Utah Jazz swingman is averaging 28.0 points and has managed double-digit free-throw attempts in five of his six games. Almond should be back in the NBA very soon but it will be improving his all-around game that determines whether he breaks into an NBA rotation.

Trey Gilder, Maine - Bill Walker's recall to the Celtics has placed Gilder into the starting lineup, and he has been nearly unstoppable in his first two games as a starter. Gilder shot .692 (18-26) and averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 rebounds over the weekend. He has a lot of upside with his 6-9 frame and great athleticism, so expect Gilder to return to the NBA after starting this season on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster.

Desmon Farmer, Reno - Farmer has always been a top scorer when he plays in the NBA D-League, and this season is no exception with 25.8 points per game. His main concerns right now are getting some more accuracy on his three-pointers (.390, 30-77) and cutting down on his 4.2 turnovers per game. Farmer does have more NBA service than many of the other top shooting guards in the league right now, so an NBA team might take a flyer on Farmer if they want a more experienced player.

Reggie Williams, Sioux Falls - Williams was missing in action for a few games with a groin injury, but returned after Christmas and responded by earning NBA D-League Performer of the Week honors. Williams is averaging 26.4 points and is very efficient when it comes to piling up the points, shooting .595 from the field, .829 from the line, and .464 from the field. He also showed a new wrinkle to his game on Sunday with a season-high seven assists and will get the chance to shows more skill at getting teammates involved with defenses focused on him.

Carlos Powell, Albuquerque  -  Powell took matters into his own hands on Sunday and exploded for 40 points, helping the Thunderbirds snap a six-game losing streak. Powell is among the league leaders with 23.6 points and is very accurate from the field with a .525 field-goal percentage. Opponents are having trouble handling him one-on-one as Powell is second in the league at getting to the line with 9.3 free-throw attempts per game.

Ron Howard, Fort Wayne- Howard has established himself as one of the NBA D-League's top small forwards with 22.4 points per game. He also is one of the league's top three-point shooters at a .450 (18-40) clips from long-range and has shown some presence on the defensive end by ranking among the top twenty with 1.7 steals.
