GATORADE Call-Up Candidates: 1/20

Share This:

Mike Harris, Rio Grande Valley Vipers - Harris has been on a tear since returning from the Houston Rockets. Since being inserted into the starting lineup three games ago, Harris is averaging 32.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. He had one of the best games in NBA D-League history on Sunday with 48 points and 24 rebounds in a win over the Dakota Wizards.

Morris Almond, Springfield Armor – Almond continues to score at will, get to the line a lot, and not compile very many assists. However, for someone who has the ball in his hands so often, he doesn’t turn the ball over very much (only ten in his last five game).

Carlos Powell, Albuquerque Thunderbirds -Powell had another solid week for the Thunderbirds, averaging 21.7 points in three games. He may be the most consistent player in the NBA D-League, topping 20 points in 15 of his 20 games this season.

Will Conroy, Rio Grande Valley Vipers – Since joining the Vipers right before the Showcase, Conroy’s game has gone back to the player that was one of the league’s top point guards in the 2006-07 season, rather than last season’s scoring king. Conroy is only averaging 14.0 points but has dished out 14.0 assists per game in his first ten contests with the Vipers, which will put him in the league lead once he plays enough games to qualify. He is also taking good care of the ball with an outstanding 3.28 assist-to-turnover ration.

Dwayne Jones, Austin Toros – Jones is turning in the best rebounding season in NBA D-League history, and should easily break Rod Benson’s record of 591 in 2007-08 if he sticks around Austin. However, that might not happen as another Anthony Tolliver call-up leaves Jones as the most productive and most experience big man currently in the league. He shouldn’t be tossing up double-doubles and shooting 60 percent from the field for too much longer before an NBA team makes the call.

Reggie Williams, Sioux Falls Skyforce – Williams has slowed down a bit from his torrid early January scoring, but he continues to light up NBA D-League defenses with efficient offiense. Williams, who scored 36 points in a game last Friday, is also showing more of an all-around game by picking up his rebounding and assists. Both of his  January averages in those categories (6.7 rpg and 3.2 apg) are up from his December numbers.

Curtis Stinson, Iowa -  Stinson continues to lead the Energy towards a conference title and the NBA D-League’s best record. He has scored in double-figures in 22 of his 23 games and also leads the league with 9.8 assists. If Stinson can pick up his assists totals slightly and doesn’t get a call-up, he can challenge Walker Russell’s NBA D-League season record of 508 assists. (He has 225 with 27 games left). Right now the only blemish on his season is a  4-24 line from three-point range.

Dontell Jefferson, Utah Flash – Jefferson had some rough games coming out of the Showcase, and is shooting only 42 percent from the field in January. His three-point  shot has fallen by the wayside with Jefferson only making nine of his 31 attempts this month, Despite the struggles, he is still one of the league’s top guards and is capable of a big game like his 17-point, 13-assist outing on Sunday night. A more consistent offensive output on a nightly basis should be what gets him back in the NBA.

Coby Karl, Idaho Stampede – Karl returned to Idaho last week after being waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he is playing like somebody belongs back on an NBA roster very soon. Karl has been a great addition to the high-octane Idaho attack, averaging 28.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in his first three games. The former Boise State star exploded for 36 points in two straight games this weekend after being held to 13 in his season debut. After playing little for Cleveland this season, he may take a bit of time to find his long-range shot (8-26 from three so far in Idaho), but once he does he will be on the league’s elite offensive players.

Alonzo Gee, Austin Toros – Gee came off the bench for the first time last Thursday and was held to only five points, but bounced back in his last game with 21 and seven rebounds. He has been of the NBA D-League’s most consistent offensive threats and has also made a big impact on the boards for a 6-6 player, averaging 8.0 rebounds in January. Gee also flashed an outside shot for the first time on Tuesday, making all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. Was it anomaly or a sign of a new wrinkle in his already superb offense? We shall see.
