After the Draft

The average "expert" fantasy draft is remarkably similar to yours in a number of ways:

- There's always one guy who hates his team, almost immediately.
- There's a fair amount of good-natured (and sometimes not-so-good natured) ribbing of the other players.
- There are significant differences of opinion as to the value of certain players.
- And guys slip through the cracks.

At this year's draft for the annual Yahoo! Friends and Family league, which includes a number of writers and editors from Yahoo and Rotowire, RW's Chris Liss was the guy who hated his team right away, I caught some abuse for complaining about my draft position (12th of 12 teams) and we couldn't agree on Zach Randolph.

And just 12 hours afterwards, the first claims hit the waiver wire - as one team dropped Thabo Sefolosha and picked up Peja Stojakovic.

Now, how does a guy with Peja's track record fall out of a pool 168 players deep? Some of the players were probably looking for high-upside youngsters in the late rounds (I drafted Terrence Williams and Hasheem Thabeet in the 13th and 14th). Some might have been scared off by his lengthy injury history. Whatever the reason - if Peja has a season like his 2007-08, when he played in 77 games and averaged three made threes per contest - he'll be an absolute steal.

Here's a quick look at some of the other players that went undrafted last night. Depending on how the rest of the preseason plays out, a lot of these guys could have real value:

Ronny Turiaf (GSW) - Personally, I like to avoid the Warriors in general - Don Nelson's rotations are too unpredictable, and there's entirely too much drama surrounding that organization right now. But Turiaf was among the league leaders in blocks last season, even as a part-timer.

Jarrett Jack (TOR) - Should log significant minutes even if he isn't a starter, and Toronto's offense should be potent.

Joel Przybilla (POR) - Are we REALLY so sure that this is the year Greg Oden starts to live up to his advance billing?

Kendrick Perkins (BOS) - Are we REALLY so sure Kevin Garnett is 100% healthy? Would you be surprised to see Perkins and Rasheed Wallace playing alongside each other?

Mike Miller (WAS) - His role is unclear. His shooting ability is not.

Rafer Alston (NJN) - Sure, he's probably the third guard on New Jersey's depth chart at the point. But he played very well down the stretch for Orlando last season; stands to reason he'll get a chance to play somewhere.

Now, right now I don't like any of those guys enough to drop someone on my team. But let's say Terrence Williams turns an ankle, or gets stuck under Bobby Simmons and Jarvis Hayes in the Nets' rotation in training campÖ clearly, I have some options available.

Good luck in your drafts, if you haven't picked your teams yet. If you have, don't forget, a fantasy roster is never carved in stone.
